What is FUT Hair Transplant?
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a surgical procedure of hair transplant in which follicular units of about 4 hairs are transplanted into a patient’s bald hair area. The oil glands that are present in follicular units enable the safe transplant of thousands of grafts in a session. Since these grafts are very small, it can be transplanted into small areas of the scalp. Therefore irregular clumps of hair that would result in older methods of transplant are avoided in FUT hair transplant. The surgeons who perform FUT hair transplant should be highly skilled and experienced. The result of FUT hair transplant is usually natural looking hair.
How is FUT hair transplant performed?
The hair in the donor area of the scalp is trimmed. Anesthesia is injected in the donor area of the scalp. The hair follicles are removed individually in a specific pattern called spread arrangement. This is done to evenly extract the hair follicles without leaving any sign of hair removal. This procedure is performed under a microscope to provide utmost care to preserve the hair follicles. The follicular units are extracted in strips used for micro-dissection before the transplantation. Anesthesia is injected into the recipient area of the scalp and the extracted hair follicles are inserted using a micro-needle into the bald area. The incisions in the donor area are closed using stitches or staples.
Number of sessions required : Up to 4000 hair follicles can be transplanted in a session. The total number of sessions that are required to complete the hair transplant depends on the quantity of coverage that a patient requires.
