About Dental Implants

Dental Implants

This is an artificial tooth root, which is put into your jaw to hold a bridge or a replacement tooth. A dental implant might be an alternative for those who have lost a tooth or teeth because of an injury, periodontal disease, or periodontal, or some other cause.

Kinds of dental implants
  • Endosteal (in the bone): This is the most often used kind of implant. The various kinds are blades, screws or cylinders, surgically inserted into the jawbone. Each implant holds several prosthetic teeth. Endosteal is often used as an option for patients with removable dentures or bridges.
  • Subperiosteal (on the bone): They are positioned on top of the jaw with the metal framework's posts extending through the gum to hold the prosthesis. These kinds of implants are designed for patients who are not able to wear traditional dentures and who have lesser bone height.

Can anybody get dental implants?

Generally, anybody healthy enough to go through a routine oral surgery or dental extraction may be considered for a dental implant. Patients must have enough bone and healthy gums to hold the implant. Patients who have had radiation therapy to the neck/head area, heavy smokers, or those affected by uncontrolled chronic diseases, like heart disease or diabetes must be examined on a personal basis. If you're thinking about implants, consult your dentist to be certain they are best for you.

What is a dental implant procedure like?

Based on your specific problem and the kind of implant selected, your periodontist will make a treatment plan customized to meet your needs.

  • Replacing a single tooth if you're missing a tooth, a crown and an implant may replace it.
  • Replacing numerous teeth if you're missing numerous teeth, implant-supported bridges may replace them.
  • Replacing all of the teeth if at all you're missing all of your teeth, full denture or an implant-supported full bridge, an implant-supported may replace them.
  • Sinus augmentation- The upper back jaw has usually been by far the most challenging areas to effectively place dental implants, because of inadequate bone quality and quantity and the close distance to the sinus. Sinus augmentation may help correct this issue by raising the sinus floor and developing bone for the positioning of dental implants.
  • Ridge modification abnormalities in the lower or upper jaw may leave you with an insufficient bone where to place dental implants. To correct the issue, the gum is lifted away from the ridge to uncover the bony defect. The deformity is then filled with bone or bone substitute to develop the ridge.

What can you expect after getting a dental implant?

Dental implants are similar to your own teeth and will need the same care. So as to keep your implant plaque-free and clean, brushing and flossing still have to be done.

After treatment, your periodontist will work very closely with you and your dentist to create the perfect care plan for you. Regular follow-up visits will be planned to observe your gums, implant, and teeth, to ensure they are healthy.

How painful are dental implants?

Many people who have got dental implants state that there is hardly any pain associated with the procedure. Local anesthesia may be used during the procedure, and many patients state that implants have minimal discomfort compared to a tooth extraction.

How Do I you look after Dental Implants?

Dental implants need the same attention as actual teeth, which include frequent dental checkups, flossing, brushing, and rinsing using an antibacterial mouthwash.
