Professor Doctor Safiye Yılmaz was born in 1973 in Manisa, Turkey. She attended Bornova Anatolian High School, which is one of the best schools of Izmir. In 1991, she started studying at Ege University Faculty of Medicine. She graduated from Ege University with an outstanding degree in 1991. She started to work in Izmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital in 1997 as Chief Assistant and then she became an Associate Professor and a specialized ophthalmologist while she was still working there.
Safiye Yılmaz has gained the title of Professor in 2011 due to her outstanding work in her studies. She is very active in academic life as well. As one of the leading female oculists in her field with investigative personality as a trait, she has published more than 200 articles both in Turkish and English since her school years to even today. This made her gain respect from her contemporaries as a leading optometric physician. She is specialized in Cataract Surgery, Refractive Surgery, Glaucoma Surgery, Keratoplasty and Strabismus Surgery.
She is a referee for international SCI Journals and she plays an active role in Turkish Ophthalmological Association as a long-time member. She is also a member of American Academy of Ophthalmology which is the world's largest association of eye physicians and surgeons. AAO advocates for patients and the public and set standards for ophthalmic education. Furthermore, she is an active lead of The International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS), a partner of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the leading worldwide organization for refractive surgeons.
She speaks English fluently and she has patients from every part of the world. She achieved great success nationwide and is most famous for treating a patient who had been sightless until he was 34 years old.
