About Orthodontics

This information is intended for general information only and should not be considered as medical advice on the part of Health-Tourism.com. Any decision on medical treatments, after-care or recovery should be done solely upon proper consultation and advice of a qualified physician.

What is orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment is a method of moving or straightening teeth, to enhance the look of the teeth and how they function. It may even help to look after the long-term health of your jaw joints, teeth, and gums, by distributing the biting pressure over all your teeth.

How do you know if you Need Orthodontics?

Depending on diagnostic tools, which include photographs, a clinical examination, medical and dental health history, special X-rays and plaster models of your teeth, an orthodontist a dentist or an orthodontist may choose whether orthodontics are recommended, and create a treatment plan that is best for you.

If you have any of the following, you might be a candidate for orthodontic treatment:

  • Overbite, often known as "buck teeth"
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Misplaced midline
  • Spacing
  • Crowding

At what age must you have orthodontic treatment?

The ideal time is usually during childhood; however, grownups may have orthodontic treatment as well, and more are doing so. Age is much less essential than having the correct number of teeth. In kids, it might be essential to wait for enough teeth to come through prior to starting treatment.

Will you need to have teeth removed to make room?

You might not have adequate room for all your permanent teeth. In that case, you might need to have a few permanent teeth removed to make space.

How is treatment carried out?

Treatment is carried out in two ways, removable brace or fixed brace.

What is a removable brace?

Simple treatment might be performed with a removable brace (a plate, which can be removed to be cleaned). It has fragile springs and wires attached that move the teeth using mild pressure. This includes:

  • Aligners
  • Detachable space maintainers
  • Jaw repositioning devices
  • Cheek and lip bumpers
  • Palatal expander
  • Removable retainers
  • Headgear

What is a fixed brace?

Usually, teeth should be guided more correctly than they may be using a removable brace. Therefore, a fixed brace is used. This has brackets bands and brackets that are temporarily stuck to the teeth. An elastic wire joins all the brackets and lets the teeth be moved. You cannot take the appliance out yourself, so it’s known as a fixed appliance. This includes:

  • Braces
  • Special fixed
  • Fixed space maintainers

Will it hurt?

All appliances might feel odd in the beginning, and may trigger discomfort. If the problem fails to disappear, the orthodontist might be able to perform adjustments to assist. Teeth are often uncomfortable just after a brace has been adjusted; however, this will settle.

How successful will it be?

Good results are determined by both the expertise of the orthodontist, along with the helpfulness and enthusiasm of the patient. It is essential to adhere to any instructions provided by the orthodontist and to attend any appointments you have with them.

Is orthodontic work permanent?

Even after retention, it's usual for slight tooth movements to occur throughout life. Therefore, no permanent assurance may be offered. But it's uncommon for teeth to alter enough to require more treatment. It is vital to keep having your teeth examined by your dental team while you're having orthodontic treatment. You as well have to take extra care of your mouth and teeth.

Duration of procedure/surgery : The duration of treatment is determined by how serious the issue is, and it might take anything from a couple of months to two-and-a-half years. Many people may be treated in 1 to 2 years.
