What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a prolonged condition which causes body tissues to swell. It starts in the legs or arms before spreading to other body parts.


What are the symptoms of lymphedema?

  • The major symptoms of lymphedema include:
  • Any bangles, watches, bracelets or rings feel tight when you wear them
  • Feeling of plumpness in your legs and arms
  • Reduced suppleness around your ankles and wrists

What are the causes of lymphedema?

The condition starts due to problems emanating from the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a connection of blood vessels and glands throughout the body. The system is vital for draining unnecessary fluids from the tissues especially those containing viruses and bacteria. Another significant role of the lymphatic system is fighting diseases due to the large numbers of leucocytes found in the system. Some of the causes of lymphedema include:

  • Any damage, increased fluids in tissues or unwanted developments in the system may cause lymphedema.
  • Lymphedema may also occur by cancer treatment during radiotherapy
  • Medications such as tamoxifen cause injury to the lymphatic systems which consequently lead to lymphedema.

Types of Lymphedema

  • Primary lymphedema- this type develops due to defective genes that affect the growth of the lymphatic system. This type of lymphedema mostly develops at an early age but may also develop in late age.
  • Secondary lymphedema- this condition develops as a result of damages on the lymphatic system or defective drainage of tissue fluids. This type of lymphedema may also occur after cancer treatment, an infection or even swelling of the limb. The secondary lymphedema is more common than the primary type.

Due to the weakening of the lymphatic system, an individual becomes prone to numerous diseases.

What are the treatment options for lymphedema?

Lymphedema cannot be treated but rather it is controlled just like many other chronic diseases. The control measures aim at reducing the fluid build-up in the body tissues. Some of the common measures of control include:

  • Wearing tight clothes
  • Regular physical exercise
  • Going for full body massage
  • Eating a well-balanced and healthy diet
  • Maintaining a generally healthy lifestyle
  • Elevating your feet and arms while resting

If you have plans to travel by air yet you are a lymphedema patient, ensure that you wear compression clothing. The air cabin pressure may lead to swellings due to changes in altitude levels. Confirm that the clothing is tight enough since a garment that does not fit you properly may lead to further swelling.


Control measures of lymphedema after cancer treatment

  • Keep the area of surgery from any injuries for as long as you can
  • Avoid the blood pressure cuff being used on the arm that underwent surgery
  • Shave your armpits using an electric shaver only
  • Always ensure to wear gloves during activities that may lead to finger or arm injury
  • Use mild soap and warm water when washing your feet or arms
  • Do not wear shoes that tighten your feet
  • In case of any cuts, insect bites or scratches, visit your doctor for check-up for any infections
  • Apply sunscreen lotion when basking in the sun to avoid sunburns
  • If swelling or tightness occurs around your arm or feet, seek medical attention
