Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Paul Schneider is Head of the Department of Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the
DRK Kliniken Berlin | Mitte since 2005. A particular focus of the department is the thoracic surgery and the
surgical treatment of bronchial carcinoma, of lung metastases, tumors of the mediastinum and the
pulmonary emphysema.
The Department for Thoracic Surgery is interdisciplinary embedded in the lung cancer center with the
departments of pneumological oncology, pneumology and radio-oncology. The specific surgical techniques
are tissue-friendly, parenchyma-saving resections with bronchoplastic and angioplastic surgery to avoid
the removal of pulmonary lobe (pneumonectomy).
The laser surgeries as well as the extended resections for lung cancer in the mediastinum, on the chest
wall and diaphragm are among our specialties. The videothorakoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic
interventions comprise approximately 50% of our surgical procedures.
The newly established interdisciplinary intensive care unit provides the necessary security during the first
postoperative days. The close cooperation with the Clinic for Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care and Pain
Management leads to a rapid mobilization of patients after surgery in the sense of fast-track concept, and
hence a low-complication postoperative phase.
