Prof Lluís Guirado is the Director of the Nephrology Service and Renal Transplant Unit at the Fundació Puigvert Hospital in Barcelona, Spain. After graduating in Medicine and Surgery from the Central University of Barcelona in 1986, he got specialized in Nephrology at the Fundació Puigvert and Autonomous University of Barcelona. In 1991, he became a Consultant in Nephrology at the Renal Transplant Unit of the Fundació Puigvert, and subsequently took up his current role. He’s also working as a Professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and University of Vic and Central de Catalunya.
A frequent national and international speaker, Prof Guirado is active in clinical research investigating renal transplantation from living and expanded criteria donors, chronic renal failure, immunosuppressive treatment, and opportunistic infections in renal transplantation. Prof Guirado has authored/co-authored numerous publications on these subjects in both the national and international medical press.
He has more than 100 publications in national and foreign magazines. Among the most prominent are the publications related to the use of elderly donors in kidney transplantation, living kidney donor and those dealing with viral infections in the immediate post-transplant phase.
He has also participated in the clinical development of numerous immunosuppressive drugs in different stages of development (II, III and IV).
