In 1993, Hospital S. Gonçalo de Lagos was founded and by the year 1999 became the first health unit in Portugal to receive the Certification of Quality by the NPEN/ISO 9001:2008. Both the clinical staff and surgical team are highly qualified experts in their field, possessing a high degree of proficiency and experience. All doctors on the surgical team speak one or more languages including English. They perform 1000s of surgeries annually and provide both inpatient and outpatient services.

Each patient is ensured of individualized care and attention. Hospital rooms for patients range from private to 3-4 bedded wards. All are equipped with modern conveniences.

Operating rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including a room for pre-anaesthesia and transfer. Additionally, the recovery room and intermediate care permit the use of medically advanced surgical skills.

Hospital S. Gonçalo de Lagos provides all patients with 24 hour English speaking medical assistance. Furthermore, all patients admitted to the hospital are visited by one of their English speaking welfare staff. A 24 hour ambulance service is also in place.
